Self catering holiday cottage in Clonard, Enfield, County Meath
“Iona” is a four bedroom self catering holiday cottage situated in the historical location of Clonard, county Meath, where St. Finian was made Bishop of Clonard in 520 A.D. He opened a school here which later grew to be one of the most important seats of learning in Europe. It is said that in the height of its fame, this school attracted thousands of pupils from all over Ireland, England and the Continent, from it came such eminent men as St. Brendan and St. Colmcille. Sadly there is now no trace of Clonard’s ancient glory, though there is an Anglo-Norman motte to be seen. See www.meathtourism.ie for more information on the locality.
Iona is within walking distance of the Royal Canal and the River Boyne and is an ideal base for walking fishing and cycling. If you’re not the adventurous type and just wish to relax, Iona is located in the heart of the Meath Countryside surrounded by farmland. |
